Intertextuality

Part of my plan was to make my website reflect the codes and conventions of other BBC3 programmes which I did through a variety of linguistic and semiotic codes. For example, I used bold white sans serif font and a pink & black colour scheme to reflect conventions of BBC3 and BBC IPlayer. The majority of my images were medium shots with either a main single focus or two or three equal points of focus. This is reflective of the style of Reggie Yates & Stacey Dooley as well as Louis Theroux, whom despite not being a BBC3 figurehead is popular within BBC3's demographic.

For the episode entitled Should Exams Be Cancelled, I wanted to clearly differentiate between this and the episode entitled Coronavirus On The Youth. Therefore, in my photography, I wanted to focus on Coronavirus for the latter episode and coming of age for the former. It was my intention to make intertextual references to The Breakfast Club in order to achieve this goal. Unfortunately, only one cast member was able to attend due to Coronavirus travel restrictions meaning I had to adapt and instead create an original image. See below for comparison:

In order to keep up with the exam theme, I would have provided materials such as past papers and textbooks as props to suit the mise-en-scene of the school environment as evident in the above picture, whch is visible on my website.

Finally, I linked my season finale promotion shot, concerning school proms, to BBC3 romcom Gavin and Stacey by referencing wrtier and star James Corden who made an infamous set of comments regarding proms during the promotion of his Netflix musical The Prom. By referencing James Corden, it was my intention that this product could capitalise of the success of other BBC3 shows and generate enough "buzz" subsequently to gain viewership of the entire series

Components of media theoretical framework

The website has a variety of shots and angles. I've mostly focused on mixed shots that enables the audience to emotively connect to the focus of my documentary. This provides the foundation of the core narrative of each episode. In turn, this promotes the documentary as the audience already develops an emotional connection to the main focus of my characters. The variety of representations ensure a socially conscious audience.

It was my intention to include greater racial representation, including an episode specifically on BLM and the impact of this on BBC3's demographic. I was unable to do so as the date I had scheduled (9th December 2020), I was self isolating. Therefore, for the episodes entitled "Is Britain Still Racist?" and "Is Prom Outdated?" I was able to recycle some photography I had previously completed (for planning tasks and as favours to my friends) in order to satisfy the requirements of my brief. In spite of this, I feel my online product has been enhanced as a result of these modifications as my product now has greater appeal to a female demographic (which was the demographic of most of my respondents in my audience survey research) and has deeper connections to social issues of young people than I had initially planned.

Middle to upmarket audiences will feel represented through the use of mise-en-scene in my photography. The smart-casual dress code present in all my shots will reflect the stereotypes surrounding what this audience usually wear. In addition, the mise-en-scene of home and school provide a sense of realism of what most students are familiar with. In spite of this, the landscape of Orsett Hall in "Is Prom Outdated" was perfect for capturing a postmodern sense of idealisation and fantasy about the perfections of prom. The use of the facemask costume was essential to the episode "How does Coronavirus challenge the Youth?" for immediately illustrating one way in which Coronavirus restrictions have challenged the every day lives of young people.

Convergence (And Institutions)

  •  The slogan of the show Keep On Investigating is present as an annotation on my storyboard, on my audio / visual trailer and written in text on my website
  • A link to my website is annotated on my storyboard
  • My audio visual trailer makes reference to the BBC3 platform where all episodes would be available to drop
  • My website contains social media links at the footer to FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and BBC IPlayer

My intention was to create a trailer that would establish a connection between the host and the audience, since the documentary programme as a series is very host focused, as it invites the audience to pursue themselves right into social issues of the day. This was deliberately reflected within the red screen (designed to reflect both green screens and the colour scheme of the BBC3 logo) which is notoriously associated with production. I reflected conventions of BBC trailers such as upbeat music ("Feel It Still by Portugal. The Man) and the voiceover to show awareness of institutions.
