Statement Of Intent

 Centre Number: 16706

Centre Name: Harris Academy Chafford Hundred

Candidate Name: Archie Brigden

Candidate Number: 4029

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning  and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)

PRODUCT 1

I intend to create the opening three minutes for the first episode of a documentary series called Sasha Haxell Investigates. My brief specifies that I need to appeal to a middle to upmarket, socially conscious demographic for 16-25 year olds which I will do by including a range of representations of differing age demographics, whilst heavily promoting and encouraging the younger perspective. My main location will be The Quay at Lakeside which will appeal to my demographic by providing informative escapism. Lakeside is industrious and simultaneously natural so it can both reflect the commercial lifestyle of my consumer audience whilst providing relief from this. I will use natural lighting to reflect social realism which will reflect prior knowledge of social issues for a socially conscious audience. A variety of camera angles will ensure that this is still a captivating product for audiences to look at. The clientele of Sasha Haxell Investigates is BBC Three, so Sasha Haxell Investigates should fulfil the values of the BBC to “Inform, Educate and Entertain”. Through a combination of diegetic sound, ie dialogue, and a non-diegetic pop music soundtrack, my documentary will inform and educate people about the attitudes of young people to politics in an entertaining and up-beat way. The institutional BBC logo will be at the bottom of one of my shots to show intertextuality to my clientele.

PRODUCT 2

The website is also essential in ensuring my product appeals to a socially conscious, middle to upmarket demographic of 16-25. In order to reflect that this is a BBC Three Product, I will make sure my house style uses the pink and black colour scheme as well as the bold white sans serif font for text. I will include a variety of shots in order to promote different episodes of my product but these will primarily be medium / head and shoulders shot in order to establish the narratology of each episode, thus keeping with the ideas of Todrov. In order to reflect a socially conscious demographic, my website will include demographics of different age groups (I have included teenagers and adults), genders (male and female models) and races (one of my models has an Asian background). Including a variety of backgrounds will enhance my product for the explorer demographic since there will be differing perspectives that are analysed. In order to ensure that 16-25 year olds find my website appealing, I will try and use media language like camerawork to create intertextual references.

 CONVERGENCE:

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)

My product will be digitally convergent in a variety of ways. My website will include links to BBC IPlayer where consumers would be able to stream all BBC3 products, including Sasha Haxell Investigates. There will be elements visible on both my product and website to encourage participation and further investment into my product. There is a hashtag (#SASHA) to encourage the Jenkins perspective of active audiences- which is possible due to the participatory nature of social media. It is available at the bottom of my website and within the opening shots of my product. The link to my website will also be available in my main product. Furthermore, to ensure convergence is clear my product will contain a link to my website as running text near the start of the broadcast.
