Media Language and Representation

In this research task, I am going to watch 2 BBC3 documentaries (Stacey Dooley on the DUP and Searching For Kanye West) and analyse how media language is used to create meaning and develop representations of people for the 16-25 year old audience. It is important for me to undertake this research task with these documentaries in particular because both look at the divide a difference in political opinion can create. The Kanye West documentary includes an exploration on the controversy for Kanye's support for Trump compared to the more liberal perspective and it's impact on black America whilst the Stacey Dooley doc explores the divide in Ireand between nationalism and unionism. The diverse political representations in both these documentaries construct meanings and this is down to the media language I will explore below so when it comes to my politically charged documentary, I can pay homage to these tactics.

WEBSITE TASK

This section is designed to explain the format for BBC3 websites so I can follow the formula and codes in my website. This is important so my website is realistic enough to accurately follow the codes and conventions of a BBC3 show. This will ensure that my website is appropiate for my target demographic.

LAYOUT
  • Simplistic layout.
  • Title of the show at front page as is BBC3 logo (Intertexuality)
  • Clips of previous episodes in the series
  • Genre and logo at the bottom page
  • Website is neat and organised to invite the consumer into following the show
  • Pink motif throughout reflecting BBC3 brand identity

NAVIGATION
  • Easy to navigate
  • Menu shows a variety of options
  • A range of accessible preview clips for the audience to click on
  • Few web pages for audience to click on
USE OF LANGUAGE
  • Very few words but language chosen is formal to reflect serious tone
  • Clips contain headings that are inciteful and inviting. Tease the readership
  • Photos used contain captions that explain the premise of the episode

THE IMAGES AND VIDEOS REFLECT THE USE OF LANGUAGE. THEY ARE MEANT TO BE INVITING, TEASE THE VIEWER AND EXPLAIN THE PREMISE.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, media language will be critical to creating representations in my documentary. For instance, for my soundtrack, I will try and include music that is modern but has a completely retro feel (i.e Feel It Still: Portugal The Man or American Boy: Estelle) to make the audience neutral to the generation gap. By using shots that convey the presenter learning in real time with the audience, I aim to follow a similar process to Stacey Dooley documentaries by having the viewer representing the audience as an outsider to the topic. In the website, I will aim to use the same style of images and language to represent the show and it's target audience
